about

Life in Ice.

Inspired by the inside label of one of my father's winter jackets, the songs on this EP came to fruition after a trip I undertook from July to October in 2016.

Oslo~

The last song to be written for the EP, so fittingly enough the opening track. Dedicated to the final destination of my 2016 travels and the melancholic feeling of returning home. Funnily enough the atmospheric introduction and sparse guitar are both mistakes that ended up working nicely.

Headed West~

The first song written after I returned home and overcame an incredibly debilitating bout of jet-lag. It was approaching on Summer and I wanted to channel a feeling of driving down a beach-side highway in a convertible - practically the opposite to what I was feeling at the time.

Synthesis~

The first song written after At Glacial Pace was finished. This track underwent several different variations, none of which were envisioned for this EP, before finally settling on the sound it took. I wanted to channel the immense amounts of Shoegaze I was listening to at the time into something grubby and distorted, but almost with an ethereal feel to it.

New York~

An ode to the city that never sleeps. I thought an interesting idea to explore would be the juxtaposition of the crowded imagery engendered by the city of New York with something a little more melancholy and introspective.

Began as a voice recording in a busy NYC club, this is the end result.

See You When I See You~

Initially not considered for this release, but this was one track I didn't want to fall to the wayside, especially considering this took over a year to feel finished; nearly scrapped several times. This song is about the friendships and connections we form throughout our early adulthood, however ephemeral they may be. This was at a time when everyone I knew was finishing their studies and spending the next 1 / 3 / 6 / 12 months travelling, or abroad, and not really knowing when the next time you'll see someone would be. Heavily influenced by Explosions in the Sky. I really wanted to write a 10 minute song.

So Turn Out the Lights~

The first track that I tried singing over, however well that went! I was interested in using another sample considering how much I enjoyed using the club sample in New York. It just so happened that I went to Perth briefly prior to writing this song, which was where the ending sample originates from. This song is about being away from someone for the longest time you've been apart, and the excitement / apprehension of seeing them again. The last obstacle in the way being getting through an overnight Air Canada flight and the cabin still being lit with lurid fluorescent lights at 3am, well over halfway into the flight, and only wanting to sleep. Cheers AC.

Enjoy, please.
